Based in France, the studio specializes in the conservation and restoration of Japanese paintings and other East Asian pictorial art.<\/p>\n

The care for hanging scrolls –kakejiku<\/em>-, folding screens –by\u014dbu<\/em>– or handscrolls –makimono<\/em>– requires expert knowledge and hand skills<\/strong> that can only be achieved through long years of training.\n This is the type of excellence Sh\u014dend\u014d offers to its clients all across Europe.<\/p>\n

The name Sh\u014dend\u014d (\u677e\u71d5\u5802) was born from training at Usami Sh\u014dkakud\u014d (\u677e\u9db4\u5802) in Kyoto. Following the tradition of inheriting one character from the master\u2019s atelier, Sh\u014d (\u677e, pine) was kept and paired with En (\u71d5, swallow), echoing the crane\n (\u9db4) of Sh\u014dkakud\u014d.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

Sh\u014dend\u014d values the traditions of Japanese painting conservation, restoration, and mounting while remaining attentive to the latest technical advances and conservation standards.<\/p>\n

The Sh\u014dend\u014d studio recreates the environment of a Japanese conservation workshop. Work is primarily done on tatami mats and low workbenches, as this traditional setup<\/strong> provides the ideal conditions for these delicate\n tasks.<\/p>\n

Sh\u014dend\u014d uses only the finest materials<\/strong>, carefully selected from trusted Japanese makers and suppliers. These include various handmade washi<\/em> papers, pure silk fabrics such as kinran <\/em>\u2014\n woven with gold thread \u2014 and donsu <\/em>\u2014 damask \u2014 as well as other premium materials.. The adhesives employed in scroll and screen conservation\u2014wheat starch paste, aged paste (furunori<\/em>), seaweed glue (funori<\/em>),\n and animal glue (nikawa<\/em>)\u2014are all natural materials with a long history of safe use in art conservation.<\/p>\n

In addition to hands-on restoration work, Sh\u014dend\u014d provides specialist advice and technical reports<\/strong> for collectors, galleries, auction houses, and institutions dealing with Japanese and East Asian paintings, remotely\n or on site.<\/p>\n

Assessments may be based on direct examination or detailed photographic documentation<\/strong> and may address materials, structure, condition, mounting, and previous interventions.<\/p>\n

Technical observations may also contribute to the understanding of a work\u2019s possible period, history, or consistency with a proposed hypothesis. They do not constitute formal authentication, attribution, dating, or valuation.<\/p>\n

He has been fascinated by Japan and its culture since his youth. A passion for art and history led him to study at La Cambre (Brussels), where he obtained a Master’s degree in Paper Conservation<\/strong> and discovered how\n deeply Japanese materials and techniques have shaped Western practices.<\/p>\n

Following his degree, he spent a year at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts<\/strong>, working alongside master conservators trained in Japan on the restoration of folding screens and scrolls. A Japan Foundation fellowship<\/strong> then brought him to Japan to deepen his language studies. He then joined the prestigious Usami Shokakudo<\/strong> <\/strong>studio in Kyoto<\/strong>,\n where he spent nearly eight years immersed in traditional Japanese conservation and mounting – refining his skills and working on countless pieces, both in the studio and at temples.<\/p>\n

Drawing on this experience, he returned to Europe and founded Sh\u014dend\u014d in 2025.
